Every day, major media outlets such as ESPN show you big name stars, athletes who have name recognition worldwide and can sell products by themselves are constantly shown, competing in a select few big cities in the United States. If you have television, chances are you can see these guys play through the production of a major media company. And if you are wealthy and/or live in one of these select cities, you can watch these guys play, often spending over 100 dollars a game just to see them play once. Many fans organize their lives and their identities by associating with these major league pro teams or with universities in major conferences. Most of these fans like myself attempted to play these sports as a child, but were awful in their efforts, not even usually playing at the high school level. But yet they watch and admire the skill of these talented athletes.
But if you are like many people in the United States, you may live a few hours or more from the nearest major pro sports venue. And a solid majority of college students did not attend universities with recognizable sports teams. Even at these colleges with major teams, they still have other athletic teams that draw very few fans despite competing at a high level.
And this is what Small Time Sports is about. My mission in creating this site is to give coverage and write about the unique things that go on in sports every day in every location in the country. I hope anyone that sumbles on this site will take the time to turn off the television, and go outside and watch the athletes of their hometowns and see that there are far more athletes that are still very talented competing everyday in their cities, and that you should identify with the sports you see most commonly in person. Unless you are very wealthy, it is not easy to watch major college sports and pro sports that often in person. And is it really that fun watching sports through a television? Unless a major event is in progress, why not spend time watching sports you can see everyday, and get to know athletes whose careers are developing? Many of these athletes you see in Small Time Sports will become big name stars. Many others will not. But for a cheap price, you can go watch them now, potentially catch a future star but nevertheless have a good time. When I attended High Point University in North Carolina, many of our top athletes knew me by name. That is what Small Time Sports great, the ability to connect with the athletes who are competing at a level that is often times still pretty high.
